Q&A
Which part of your work do you find most rewarding?
Seeing a concept evolve from sketches, drawings and discussions into a fully realised visual is incredibly satisfying. I love the moment when a client truly connects with an image our talented team has produced, gaining clarity and excitement about their project. Helping to visualise the potential of a space feels impactful. It’s also rewarding to collaborate with 3D artists, architects and designers, exchanging ideas and problem-solving to produce compelling visuals. Ultimately, the joy comes from creating work that inspires, informs, and adds value to our clients and the built environment.

Which is more important to you, transformation or preservation?
In architecture, both are equally important. Preservation maintains historical and cultural identity, protecting heritage buildings and ensuring continuity. However, transformation allows architecture to evolve, addressing modern needs, environmental concerns, and technological advancements. Many of the most successful architectural projects strike a balance. Prioritising transformation or preservation depends on a building’s significance, its community role and environmental considerations. Ultimately, architecture thrives when it respects history while embracing progress to ensure relevance for future generations.

What’s your favourite place or building and why?
My favourite building is my home. At first, we restored a derelict lodge and lived in it for 10 years. Although we loved its character, our family’s needs evolved, leading us to create a new home on the adjoining site — a contemporary reimagining of the lodge. We preserved key design elements like the pitched roof, red brick, and terracotta tiles, maintaining a connection to the past while adapting it for modern living. The result is a home that blends the warmth of the past with the functionality of today — a space designed around our lives and needs, a retreat that feels uniquely ours.

If you could change one thing in the built environment, what would it be?
Less gender disparity in our industry. This could result in more sustainable, inclusive, community-focused and safer places for people. More family-friendly housing solutions, such as co-housing, multi-generational living, and designs that accommodate changing life stages. A shift away from profit-driven, high-density, luxury developments to more liveable, balanced and sustainable communities.

How will cities of the future be different from cities of today?
Cities of the future will be more sustainable, connected and human-centric — prioritising people. Green spaces will be integrated into urban design, improving air quality and wellbeing. Buildings will be more adaptable, using modular construction and sustainable, recycled materials. There will be less congestion and pollution with transportation shifting towards electric. Shared mobility and mixed-use neighbourhoods will encourage walkability, fostering stronger communities.
