Great design isn't undertaken in isolation. It's the cumulative expression of a dialogue between a client and an array of experts.

"Great design isn't undertaken in isolation. It's the cumulative expression of a dialogue between a client and an array of experts.

Our work draws on a deep understanding of this engagement, to deliver activity-based architecture and experience-based designs on a human scale.

Globally, we’ve applied these skills to diverse education projects. Now, we're using them to help serve the UK's broader regeneration agenda."

Harry founded Studio Hoodless, a highly adaptable architecture practice with expertise in environmental design and sustainability and creating education spaces. He’s also an associate lecturer at Manchester School of Architecture and Head of Architecture for KAMPUS International Ltd.

Which is more important, being creative or being practical?

Neither, or both — It’s more about being distinctive and relevant, but also different.

How will cities of the future be different from cities of today?

Who truly knows? If you look at sci-fi, there are hints at where things could end up. Verticality and higher human density are consistent themes. We see them happening already. This gives rise to evolving ways of finding humanity within the manufacturing of place. I envision polarising opinions on nature and material, technology and wellbeing.

What are your guiding principles?

Work well with others — design is a dialogue. Consider human activity at a granular scale and as a part of nature in everything we do — place is a learning environment. Reconcile the use of natural material and postindustrial manufacture. Learn from tradition and push future boundaries. Create bright ideas for a sustainable future.

How do you ensure a project is sustainable and culturally appropriate?

Ensuring the project can flex with culture as it evolves is key, and a component of sustainability. For us, sustainability is a vast entanglement of everything on which the development of our species depends. Ensuring what we consider good growth requires continual and broad reflection and action in equal measure. Our human brains can only cope with component parts of this question, so, break it down.
